Biography
Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872–1953) was a British Indian Islamic scholar best known for his English translation and commentary of the Quran, first published in 1934. His work, The Holy Quran: Text, Translation and Commentary, remains one of the most widely read English translations. Born in Surat, India, he was educated at Cambridge and served in the Indian Civil Service before devoting himself to Islamic scholarship. His translation is celebrated for its elegant prose and extensive footnotes.
